About ISTDP Ontario

We are a group of ISTDP practitioners based in Kingston, Ontario, in collaboration with a global leader in the teaching and research of ISTDP. Our mission and value are to share our passion for ISTDP by raising awareness and promoting trainings in ISTDP and psychodynamic therapies in Ontario.

  • Dr. Karen Dinsmore

    Clinical and Counselling Psychologist

    Co-Founder, Faculty Member

    Dr. Karen Dinsmore is a Registered Psychologist in Ontario and a co-director of the Dynamic Psychotherapy & Psychology Centre. She is an Adjunct Faculty member of the Clinical Psychology department of Queen’s University, where she supervises and trains clinical psychology doctoral students in ISTDP. She a board member of the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA). She has trained in ISTDP with global leaders including Dr. Allan Abbass, Dr. Joel Town, and Jon Frederickson. Dr. Dinsmore is both a lifelong learner and passionate about teaching and raising interest in ISTDP.

  • Ryan Dinsmore, M.Ed.

    Registered Psychotherapist

    Co-Founder, Faculty Member

    Ryan Dinsmore is a co-director of the Dynamic Psychotherapy & Psychology Centre. He is a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario with 10 years of experience in the mental health field. He has trained directly in ISTDP with global leaders including Dr. Allan Abbass, Dr. Joel Town, Steve Shapiro, and Jon Frederickson. Ryan is specialized in treating a wide range of anxiety disorders, pain and somatic difficulties. Ryan is a strong advocate for therapeutic depth work that facilitates meaningful and long lasting change. He hopes to bring awareness and facilitate trainings in ISTDP for mental health students and professionals.

  • Dr. Behnia Haghiri

    Psychiatrist

    Faculty Member

    Dr. Behnia Haghiri is a psychiatrist and assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Queen’s University. He graduated from Queen’s psychiatry residency program in 2013 and has worked in various psychiatric settings. He started learning ISTDP in 2017 by attending courses and receiving supervision from Dr. Allan Abbass and recently, supervision from Dr. Jonathan Entis. Currently, he practices in an outpatient hospital-based clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital, mainly working with patients referred from the emergency room and post-secondary students, amongst other general referrals. He is passionate about learning, teaching and incorporating ISTDP in outpatient psychiatry settings.

  • Dr. Allan Abbass

    Psychiatrist

    Expert Consultant

    Dr. Allan Abbass is a professor of psychiatry and psychology at Dalhousie University, where he also serves as the founding director of the Centre for Emotions and Health. He has established several training programs in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) internationally and at Dalhousie University. Dr. Abbass is a past president of the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA) and currently sits on the board of directors. He frequently consults for various health agencies, sharing his expertise through over 400 presentations worldwide and now over 300 publications.
